Throughout ancient history, cities were fortified with large, thick walls around the perimeter. Often, towers were incorporated at strategic locations along the wall. Archeologists have found ancient towers believed to date back to 8000 BC. In 2010, archeologists discovered a section of the ancient city wall of Jerusalem thought to have been built by King Solomon. Part of that discovery included a corner tower that overlooked most of the adjacent valley.

Towers were added protection and security for those who lived within the city walls. It provided the advantage of being able to see the surrounding area and recognize the enemy before he got too close. It elevated the inhabitants so the weapons of their foes could not reach them. It was a high, safe place of security and protection. It was in this context that King Solomon penned this Proverb:

The name of the lord is a strong fortress;
the godly run to him and are safe.
— Proverbs 18:10

The name of the Lord is a high, safe, strong, fortified tower. Our security is in Him. When we run to Him, when we trust in Him, we have a "better view" of our surroundings and can live protected from the enemy that seeks to destroy us. Does that mean trouble will never come our way? No! But it does mean that we view it from a different perspective, knowing that we are under God's protection. It does mean that we will be better equipped to recognize sin and flee from it. We often try to build our own towers - wealth, friends, family, status -- but they provide only a false sense of security .

The name of the Lord is a strong tower! It is the only place of true safety.

God is our place of protection and security. When we trust totally in Him, we are safe.

Father, we run to you! Help me to be ever reminded that it is you, and only in you, that I have security and protection. You are my strong tower.
